41% of mobile broadband users say its their main broadband

As stated by Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, the young and the rich are leading the rise of mobile broadband.

According to Ofcom’s latest consumer research, a large number of mobile broadband users stated that its their main broadband connection. The research also found that take-up was most common among the young and the well-to-do users.

According to the findings of the report, there are around 6% of adults with only mobile broadband while 8% of users have both the fixed-line broadband connection and a mobile broadband connection. There is only fixed line broadband in 56% of UK homes. Mobile broadband is most popular among the 15-34 age group. As reported by the research “These age groups also appear to be driving sole use of mobile broadband, with around one in 10 adults in this age group using only mobile broadband,”.
The Ofcom research also stated that rich demographic groups were encouraging mobile broadband adoption.

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: “This is the first-time Ofcom has tracked the rise of mobile broadband in its annual Consumer Experience report.

“Early adopters of this type of technology tend to fall into younger demographics. Although another interesting Ofcom finding is that 8% of lower income households – earning up to £11.5k a year – are mobile broadband only.”

He further added: “Mobile broadband has come down massively in price since it was introduced and there are a number of low-cost deals on the market in the £5-10 a month range.
This raises the possibility for the budget-conscious to ditch their landline and opt for mobile phone and mobile broadband deals instead.”

Faster 7.2Mb mobile broadband launched by Virgin Media

Mobile broadband speeds have been increased by Virgin media mobile broadband to 7.2Mb.
Now the users can avail the new up to 7.2Mb Mobile broadband USB modem stick on either of Virgin Media’s mobile broadband 1GB or 3GB packages, as well as both of its contract lengths; the two month flexible tariff, or the longer 18 month plan with a free dongle.

Graeme Oxby, executive director of mobile at Virgin Media, said: “We’re thrilled to be offering this faster mobile broadband to our users. If you’re not at home or near a wireless connection, mobile broadband is the best way of staying connected on the move and we’re delighted to be making this a speedier, more pleasant experience for our customers.”

It has been shown by a recent research that despite a number of network upgrades in the previous year, the mobile broadband speeds only average around 1Mb. For instance, earlier this year when Vodafone mobile broadband was upgraded to speeds of up to14.4Mb in selected areas, the customers were suggested that they could “expect to see typical speeds of anything between 1Mb and 4Mb with a practical maximum speed of 10.8Mb”.

Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, said: “While it’s great that more mobile broadband providers are upgrading their networks, customers should not expect to receive these advertised speeds. Various factors, such as the distance from your local mobile phone mast, large numbers of users on the network and even trees that are blocking your signal, can all affect your download speed.

He also advised “If you’re looking for a new mobile broadband package, make sure that you compare coverage and run a postcode search before signing up,”

The 8GB iPod Touch offered to the users is capable of storing around 1,750 songs, 10,000 photos or 10 hours of video.

Charlotte Blanchard, director of products and services at 3, said: “The iPod Touch offers a really great browsing experience, but as with so many devices with wifi capabilities, the Internet function rarely gets used because hotspots are so hard to come by.
“Now with MiFi on 3, iPod Touch users can get wireless Internet whenever they want on the network that’s designed and built for the mobile Internet. We’ve responded to feedback from our customers to bring this bundle into our range, and at £23 a month it’s the perfect treat for Christmas.”

Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, said: “Mobile wifi is the future of mobile broadband, allowing users to connect any device they want, wherever they are. However, even with a generous 5GB download allowance you still need to be careful not to exceed you limit,” he advised.
“Going over your limit is even easier if you’re sharing your connection using mobile wifi, and at 10p per MB, out of bundle costs can soon add up.”

Mobile broadband traffic management started by Three

Traffic management has been added by Mobile network Three to its Mobile Broadband service. It will cut the speeds available to its customers using the peer-to-peer networks.

The director of corporate affairs at 3, Hugh Davies, said: Where there are areas of the network where a cell is being heavily loaded with traffic whether that’s text, voice or the internet, if it’s nearing peak capacity we will limit the speed of peer-to-peer filesharing using that cell.

He also added that there are small number of customers using a lot of bandwidth with peer-to-peer activity who will be subject to speed restrictions.

He continued: “We want to be fair so all our customers get benefit of the service at peak times. And we think it’s only right that we put this information out there to enable fair and open debate.”

As explained by Davies, the capacity can be reached in cases when a big sports event or concert tales place in an area with already high usage.

“We’re only keeping an eye on a few hundred cells out of thousands, but without measures like these would have to look at how were pricing the service,” he added. “Hopefully as the full network sharing we have with T-Mobile comes to full pace these measures won’t be need anyway.”

Generally, Peak times are between 6pm and midnight.

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: “3 is the only UK mobile broadband provider to offer a package with a 15GB download limit – which may well have attracted some heavy downloaders to its fold.

“However, the current mobile network will struggle with activities like peer-to-peer file sharing and, as 3 says, it wants the service to be improved for all its customers. It remains to be seen if other mobile broadband providers will be open about having a similar policy.”

3 frees users from congested networks, introduces traffic management

The new service will prioritize the email and web browsing over peer to peer (p2p)traffic at peak hours

One of the most desirable mobile broadband service provider in UK, 3 is all set to announce the addition of ‘traffic management’ to its mobile broadband service. The decision is mulled keeping into consideration the hassles faced by the users during the peak hours. The new service will prioritize the email and web browsing over peer to peer (p2p)traffic at busy times.

The new service is expected to speed up the connection during the peak hours. Often users face issues of congestion in data network when too much load is imposed on the network. It is now believed that all the other service providers in UK are also looking forward to acquire this service.

A 3 spokesman said: ‘We’re building more capacity, capability and reach into our network every day. Customer experience drives what we’re doing and traffic management is an important part of that. In busy areas, at busy times, customers using mobile broadband can experience a slower service.

‘We’re taking steps that improve the web browsing, email and streaming experience on our network by making sure that the real-time experience gets the priority it deserves. In order to improve the service for the majority of our customers we are actively managing the amount of bandwidth made available for p2p file sharing at peak times in busy areas.’
