With an addition of 101,000 customers, the total broadband customer base of Sky Broadband has reached 2.4 million over the last quarter.
Around a quarter of Sky customers now opts for one of its broadband packages and also there is an increase in the number of users choosing one of Sky’s triple play bundles with home phone, broadband and TV by 18%. All of the planned local exchanges are also unbundled by Sky broadband. Now it has around 500,000 customers which are linked to its local loop unbundled (LLU) network, permitting it to grant reasonably priced broadband to more owners.
Jeremy Darroch, chief executive, commented: “It has been another good quarter in what remains a tough environment, with more customers joining Sky and strong demand across our entire product range.”
It has also been declared by Sky that it would soon start providing HD set-top boxes as standard. Moreover, it is also planning to launch the UK’s first dedicated 3D channel in spring.
Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, said: “Sky’s broadband packages continue to offer great value for money, especially when taken with Sky Talk, which offers a £5 discount on monthly broadband costs, even giving customers on the Broadband Base package ‘free broadband’.
“Sky’s six months free broadband offer is still also running, which gives customers free access to its Sky Unlimited 20Mb broadband package for six months.
He further warned “However, customers on either its Broadband Base or Broadband Everyday packages do need to make sure that they don’t exceed their download allowance or they could be charged extra”.

Cheap 40Mb superfast broadband revealed by BT
Now BT is proposing a superfast 40Mb broadband. The interested users can grab it by paying less than £20 per month.
Recently, 40Mb broadband package has been revealed by BT Broadband which the owners can avail by paying around £19.99 per month. As stated by the UK’s biggest broadband provider, BT, the users need to pay around £7.47 less to avail latest BT infinity package as compared to the 50Mb broadband package of Virgin Media.
The users will also receive download speeds of up to 10Mb from BT. It declares that this speed is six times faster than Virgin Media’s service granting upload speeds of 1.5Mb.
However, in recent months, 200Mb broadband and 10Mb upload speeds have been trialled by Virgin Media on its cable network.
Gavin Patterson, chief executive officer at BT Retail, said: “BT Infinity gives customers the capacity and reliability they need in an instant and at a great value price they can afford. We are committed to rolling out superfast speeds across the UK.”
By the end of December this year, around 4 million homes and businesses will be covered by the superfast broadband service.
BT has a £1.5 billion long-term project in order to offer superfast broadband to at least 40% of the UK, by summer 2012. Moreover, it is planning to launch BT Business Total Broadband Fibre which is a superfast broadband service for businesses.
The owners can inherit the Virgin Media’s 50Mb broadband package at £28 per month in case they also take a Virgin Media phone line by paying £11 per month. Virgin Media declared that the places with the BT 40Mb service are already capable to choose Virgin Media’s service.
A Virgin Media spokesman said: “We’re not sure why people in the UK would want to wait for BT’s 40Mb service which hasn’t launched yet, when they can already get Virgin Media’s great value 50Mb service.”
Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: “BT has priced its new 40Mb service competitively, clearly with a view to competing head to head with Virgin Media’s 50Mb’s product.
“As we all watch and download more media, the uptake of superfast broadband in homes is set to escalate. Virgin Media’s 50Mb service is currently available to 12.5 million cable homes and BT claims it will serve 4 million homes and businesses with its 40Mb Infinity service by the end of this year.
“BT’s headline pricing of £19.99 a month is attractive, but potential customers should bear in mind that the option 1 package only comes with a monthly download allowance of 20GB. To get unlimited downloads with BT, customers will have take option 2 which is £24.99 a month,” added Phillips.
